Cora Youngblood Corson and Charles
From Patti and Alan Horst:
"Thought the best place to start is with a picture of their wedding announcement. It is attached to a Fourth of July Band announcement for the town of Choteau, Montana - 1904. The second picture is of a letter from Cora in 1921 - she is sending divorce papers to Charlie. So you see - their "short-lived" marriage was in fact, 17 years long! I don't blame either of them for the divorce. It seems they never had the opportunity to be together during their marriage. Cora was always on the road with her band and Charlie was in the Army Band - touring as well. I do have 17 years worth of letters from Cora to Charlie though. She speaks very fondly of him in all her letters - I think she was very much in love with him. I will translate the letter below since I don't have a scanner and had to take a digital picture of it. The third picture is of Charlie - his graduation picture from the Carlisle School of Indians. Charlie is the son of Shuyler Corson and Lucy Whitecalf Corson. He is the grandson of Two Guns Whitecalf, a very famous Indian Chief who is one of two that posed for the Indian Head Nickel."
"Charlie was also an instrumentalist and played in the Carlisle School of Indians band, the Infantry Band and the Philadelphia Fireman's Band. Hope you enjoy these few photos."
The above letter from Cora reads (all spelling is kept as written):
Anadarko, Oklahoma, March 15, 1921
Dear Chas -
Do not be to terribly surprised upon receiving this letter and contents: If you will sign this waiver and return it to me, you will be a free man about May.
I think 17 years of unmarried-married life is quite long enough dont you -
I hope you will be more fortunate in the future and allways think of me kindly -
I tried but failed -
Everything is beautiful here now. Tree's in bloom and garden's are out.
Hoping you are well and wishing you luck allways -
I am Yours Sincerely -
Cora
